For the map revision, the visual hierarchy scheme was applied to correct deficiencies in the original map layout. To shift focus away from certain map items, the word “legend” was removed from the legend, bold text was removed from the credits, and the north arrow was made less prominent (in the inset and on the map). Smaller text was also used for the credits and river annotation, and the line weight of the state boundary and frame line were reduced. In addition, “boxes” around the title, legend, and written scale were removed. To increase the prominence of specific map items, a larger map scale was applied, increasing the mapped area’s size and drawing more attention to the mapped area. Furthermore, the title was emboldened. Finally, the legend, credits, north arrow, bar scale, and written scale were rearranged (in the inset and on the map) to fill “white space” and create a “balanced” map.

Non-hierarchical items were also modified during the map revision. First, a neatline was inserted into the map and a legend was added to the inset. Second, the primary legend was rearranged in chronological order to aid in interpretation. Third, the date and data source were added to the credits. Finally, the annotation for Riggins was moved to the appropriate side of the Salmon/Little Salmon River.
